Our assessment indicates that Awake & Shine School products are confident and fit, able to Speak, read and write in English, Sharp in Mathematics, and can think for themselves. They are keenly interested in creative skills, and hobbies, and can handle computers independently.
Do our internal assessment results stand up to independent scrutiny? Many doubters were of the opinion that our holistic syllabus was a waste of time. We were advised to concentrate on conventional learning methods. It was predicted that after primary schooling, when the children joined conventional schools, they would find it difficult to compete with urban children. The oft repeated remark was “ wait till your children join other schools and you will see them falter”
Our children have proved the doubters wrong. It is significant that Children completing their primary education with us, were able to get admission in English medium schools in Kalimpong, on merit.
Follow up report on children who completed our primary course
To validate our concept and teaching methodology, we have been monitoring the progress of those children who were admitted to English medium school around Kalimpong..
The children did face initial problems of adjustment. In our school, the class size is 20-25. In the post primary stage children joined classes of size 40-60. They became just numbers in a large class, and craved for the attention, care and affection that they were used to at Awake & Shine. It was challenging for these children to adjust to the changed class room atmosphere. They were able to meet this challenge, as they were not only self confidant, but we were superior in spoken English and mathamatics.
Class 4 of 2012, comprising 13 children, finished their primary course with us in Dec 2012. Of these 6 children ( 3 granted scholarships) have finished two years at English medium schools at Kalimpong. Their annual exam results for 2014, shown below have validated our holistic syllabus and teaching methodology.

Out of the 29 children who completed primary education at Awake & Shine School in 2012 and 2013, those listed in tables above are doing well in competition with urban children.
What about the remaining 19 Children? Most of them joined local Government High School (Nepali medium), as their parents could not afford, or were unwilling to send them to the city schools. These children are all holding their own, but achieving results below potential, because of changed ethos learning ambiance, and teaching methodology in the Nepali medium.
We have concluded that Awake & shine trust needs to mobilize funds to provide scholarship to deserving children in the post primary stage.
